3.-10. April 2010 - Teams kommen aus vier Kontinenten - Brasilien und Japan sind erstmals dabei
Große Ereignisse werfen ihre Schatten voraus: So auch das traditionsreiche Albert Schweitzer Turnier für Jugend-Nationalmannschaften, das vom 3.-10. April 2010 bereits zum 25. Mal in Mannheim ausgetragen wird. Die Basketballfans in Deutschland, die wenig später bei der U17 Weltmeisterschaft der Jungen in Hamburg (2.-11. Juli 2010) erneut in den Genuss hochkarätigen Nachwuchsbasketballs kommen, dürfen sich auf ein hochinteressantes und hochklassiges Teilnehmerfeld freuen. Mit Argentinien, Australien, Brasilien, Japan, China, Neuseeland und den USA sind gleich sieben nichteuropäische Mannschaften in Mannheim am Start. Brasilien und Japan nehmen erstmals am Albert Schweitzer Turnier teil und werden sicher für ganz besonderen Flair sorgen.
Natürlich muss das Publikum in den beiden Spielhallen (US Sports Arena und MWS-Sporthalle am Herzogenried) auch nicht auf die europäische Elite verzichten: Frankreich, Titelverteidiger Griechenland, Israel, Italien, Kroatien, Spanien und die Türkei werden alles daran setzen, dass der Titel erneut in Europa verbleibt. Schließlich sind dieses Mal zwei deutsche Mannschaften am Start: die U18 von Bundestrainer Kay Blümel, die sich in Mannheim auf die im Juli folgende Europameisterschaft vorbereitet, und die U17 von Bundestrainer Frank Menz, die sich vor der bereits angesprochenen WM im eigenen Land mit den älteren Nachwuchs-Korbjägern der AST-Teilnehmer misst.
Die Vorbereitungen auf das Mammut-Turnier in Mannheim laufen auf Hochtouren. Alle wichtigen Neuigkeiten wie Start des Ticketverkaufs etc. werden künftig auch wieder auf der Turnier-Website www.ast-basketball.de verfügbar sein.
Teams from four continents – Brazil and Japan participate for the first time
It will be the 25th time that the Albert Schweitzer Tournament (AST) for youth national teams will take place in Mannheim from April 3rd to 10th, 2010. Again, basketball fans from Germany and the whole world can be excited about the very interesting and high-class participants from four continents.
The AST 2010 will be the first of two major youth basketball events in Germany in 2010 as Hamburg will welcome the best U17 teams for the World Championship from July 2nd to 11th, 2010. With Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Japan, China, New Zealand and the USA seven non-European teams will compete for the title in Mannheim. Especially Brazil and Japan will bring a special flair in the two gyms as it is their premiere at the AST.
Of course, none of the thousands of spectators has to miss the big European teams: France, defending champion Greece, Israel, Italy, Croatia and Turkey will do their best to win the prestigious AST trophy. Last but not least two German teams will play in front of their home crowd. The U18 team with Head Coach Kay Blümel will prepare for the European Championship in July while for the U17 team with Head Coach Frank Menz the AST 2010 is a very important landmark on the way to the FIBA U17 World Championship in Hamburg.
